5 Essential tips for Millennials and Gen-Z for Mental Wellness

Well, who are we kidding? Times have changed drastically. Mental health and wellness in North America is becoming a challenge for many that is affecting family life, friendships, relationships and work life. Mental wellness is crucial for everyone, but Millennials and Gen Z, in particular, face unique challenges in today’s fast-paced, digitally-driven world. Here are five essential tips for these generations to maintain and improve mental wellness:

1. Set Healthy Boundaries with Technology

Constant connectivity can contribute to stress, burnout, and anxiety. The pressure to stay "on" all the time is real, especially with social media, work emails, and endless notifications. Here is a tip: establish specific times for checking emails, social media, and work messages. Try a digital detox (even for just an hour or two a day) and create boundaries for when your devices are put away. Do your best to stay off of social media when you are bored! Prioritize face-to-face or phone conversations to combat feelings of isolation.

2. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Millennials and Gen Z are often navigating major life transitions, such as starting a career, managing finances, or figuring out personal identity when we live in a time of over-information. Feeling like you're “behind” or that you’re not meeting certain benchmarks can be overwhelming. Here is a tip: embrace a mindset that views challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than setbacks. Celebrate progress, not perfection. This can reduce stress and foster resilience when things don’t go as planned. And don’t forget, what you see on social media is not an accurate reflection of real life!

3. Practice Regular Self-Care

Life can feel like a balancing act, and many Millennials and Gen Z-ers experience high levels of stress due to work, school, relationships, or societal pressures. Self-care is essential to recharge and prevent burnout. Here is a tip: make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. It doesn’t always mean spa days; it could be taking a walk, cooking a healthy meal, meditating, journaling, or simply saying “no” to things that drain you. Prioritize activities that nurture your body, mind, and spirit. And don’t forget, staying off your phone is a part of self-care!

4. Build a Supportive Community

Many people in these generations experience feelings of loneliness or isolation, partly due to the pressures of social media or remote work environments. Having a solid support system and community is crucial for mental wellness. Here is a tip: nurture relationships with people who understand and support your mental health needs. This might mean seeking out communities online that align with your values or building in-person connections that promote authenticity and empathy. Don’t hesitate to seek professional support (like therapy or counseling) if needed.

5. Practice Mindfulness and Emotional Awareness

Stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm can be hard to manage without the tools to identify and process those emotions. Mindfulness helps in grounding oneself, which can be a powerful way to manage daily life pressures. However, we want to be mindful of non self-diagnosing challenges or constantly looking for a label. It is most important to be able to identify why we feel a particular way. Here is a tip: Set aside time each day for mindfulness practices, whether it’s meditation, deep breathing, or simply pausing to check in with yourself. Journaling can also help you reflect on your emotional state and gain insight into your thoughts, reducing feelings of being overwhelmed.
